Choosing the right material is integral to creating the best label for your shampoo bottles. Each of our materials has unique attributes that can help your label stand out on a shelf and protect the product within.
Since most personal care products are often in contact with water or a steamy bathroom, we recommend any of our vinyl or plastic options. Being both waterproof and oil resistant, plastic and vinyl are perfect for withstanding splashes and spills. You can choose white, clear, or metallic for a unique look!
If you’d like an eco-friendly material while still staying water-resistant, we also have the fantastic TerraSkin. The TerraSkin is a unique material made of 80% calcium carbonate and 20% polyethylene resin to create an environmentally friendly paper. TerraSkin is water resistant and inherently durable. This material does require a gloss or matte laminate, which are made of plastic, but otherwise it is a great, eco-friendly choice!
You may have come across the terms waterproof and water-resistant when researching the best label material for bath and beauty. While you may see these terms listed together, they are not interchangeable, and knowing the difference will help you decide which material will perform best for your bath, body, and cosmetic products.
A truly waterproof label is made of plastic or vinyl material, with an over-laminate (either glossy or matte) for even more protection. These materials will shield against water, and protect the label from shriveling, curling, or peeling. After being applied to a clean, dry surface, your waterproof labels can withstand full submersion in water for extended periods of time. You can make a splash with any of our plastic or vinyl materials! Choose from clear, white, or metallic plastic options, or select a white or clear vinyl for supreme durability.
Water-resistant labels will be able to endure moisture to a degree, but not entirely. While these materials will shield against water for a time, the look and feel of the label will be affected after contact with water is made. Water-resistant materials are recommended for products that will encounter damp environments, but not experience full immersion or long term exposure to moisture. We refer to these materials as having a “wet-strength.” Avon Classic Crest, Estate 4, Estate 9, and Black Vellum all have wet strength capability.
What size label you need depends on what you are sticking (applying) your label to.
No product is a one size fits all. Creating a mock-up label is the simplest way to see what size will work best for your needs.
Here’s how:
To determine your label size, follow these simple steps:
1. Take a piece of graph or printer paper and wrap it around your product.
2. Make tick marks where you want label to be.
3. Cut the paper down to size and wrap it around product again.
4. Repeat until your prototype is the perfect shape and fit.
5. Measure the width and length of mockup label in inches.
And you’re done!
Here are a few things to look out for when preparing your art files:
– Size of your art file should be 0.125” larger than the final cut size.
– Background color or patterns go all the way to the edge of the artwork (bleed).
– Text and design elements should be inside of the safe zone, within 0.125″ from the cut line.
– Fonts sized at 5pt or larger.
– Fonts converted to outlines, and images embedded. (We won’t see them otherwise!)
– For image files, resolution is at least 300ppi. For best quality, we recommend 800ppi.
– Files are less than 100MB each.
