How To Make a Custom Supplement Label

Are you ready to take the next step to a custom supplement label for your product? If that seems daunting, we want to help! Maybe you’ve been making your own supplement labels, and are just exploring what it would take to have a custom label printed. It all starts with a basic understanding of how to place a label order, the process your order goes through, and some key elements that make a great label!

How to Order Custom Labels

When getting ready to place a custom label order on our Live Pricing Tool, there are a few things you should know about your order. The basics include the shape and size of the label, the total quantity of labels, and the materials you’d like to use. The container holding your custom-made supplement will be the key factor in determining what size label you need. If you don’t know your size already, you can find out by wrapping a piece of paper around your container, marking where you’d like the edges to start and stop, and measuring that space in inches. You’ll then have a pretty good idea of your label dimensions.

As far as quantity goes, you can order as few or as many labels as you need. The price per label decreases as the total quantity increases. We recommend ordering at least 500 to start getting a good price per label. You can also group multiple designs together in one order to boost your total quantity as long as each design is the same size and uses the same materials. This is a great option to have in a nutraceutical label company if you have multiple versions of similar products using the same specs but a different design.

The next step in placing a label order is to select your materials. Supplement label makers usually offer a lot of options here. Choosing a unique label material can be a great way to take advantage of those options and set your product apart. We offer several specialty materials including Metallic Plastic and Holographic Plastic. Each of these materials can be used to complement your label design. Using one of these materials in partnership with a well-composed label can help you catch the eye of your target audience. In addition to these specialty materials, we offer both gloss and matte laminate to help you further customize your label. Any nutraceutical label company should be able to help you decide which material combination is best for you.

How Are Labels Made?

When talking about materials, it’s only natural to discuss a little about our process. Digital printing has come a long way since we began more than 10 years ago allowing us to offer a more customizable experience for our customers. When we receive a custom label order, the artwork is prepared for press and printed onto the material of your choice. We print in CMYK, and the inks we use are semi-transparent. This means that whatever is behind it will partially show through. For example, if you’re using a white material, such as our white plastic, the colors will show up as solid. However, if you’re using Metallic Plastic, the color will show as a metallic version.

With this option comes a lot of opportunities to make your labels unique. We understand that you may not want your entire label to be metallic, and if so, we can use a technique called spotwhite. For the parts of your label you do not want to be metallic, we print a layer of white ink underneath to keep the metallic material from showing through.

Once your design has been printed onto the material, a laminate is applied on top if the material requires one. During the order process, you have several laminate options including gloss and matte finish as mentioned previously. The label is then cut to the size you ordered, applied to rolls and boxed; ready to be shipped to you!

What Makes a Good Supplement Label?

Through the years, we’ve printed a lot of labels! Some of the designs brought to us have been good, and others not so great. From our experience, we want to offer a few guidelines to help you create a label that’s helping your product; not hurting it. A good question to ask yourself is, “Does my label communicate information clearly?” Consumers want to know key aspects of your product in a short amount of time. Make sure important information is easy to spot. Complex fonts may seem like a good idea to set your product apart but may be difficult to read. Pick fonts that represent your brand well and minimize distraction from your product. A good rule of thumb is to pick two or three fonts that work well together and stick with them.

In addition to a clear and concise label, make sure your design has unity. This means that the different parts of your label do not clash with each other. An example of poor unity is a label that has eight different fonts and nearly every color on the rainbow. When using multiple fonts or colors, make sure they pair well and compliment the other. Keep in mind that it’s easier to make a cohesive label when you have fewer variables.

One last key aspect of a great label is white space. Don’t fall under the assumption that every part of your label needs to be filled with information. You don’t want to overwhelm your customer when they see it on the shelf. Remember, you want your customer to be able to find the key information they are looking for so removing clutter from your label will help them find it quickly. Keep your design clear and concise and let white space work in your favor.
