Customer Highlight: Spoto Family Wines

We have the distinct privilege at Frontier to meet and interact with many dedicated, creative companies and small businesses. Not only do they inspire us as creatives and entrepreneurs, but they also challenge us to incorporate innovative methods to meet their label needs. Without these makers, we wouldn’t be where we are today. To show our gratitude, we want to make a habit of highlighting some of our favorite makers!

One of these inspiring makers is Stuart Spoto, who owns and operates Spoto Family Wines and prints custom wine labels with us. Spoto Wines, located in Sacramento county in California, is an ultra-boutique winery that produces less than five hundred cases of premier Napa wines a year. Though the wines are primarily sold at high-end restaurants and wine shops in California, Spoto Wines are available on a national level as well.

The Early Days

As implied by the name, Spoto Wines is entirely family operated, as it has been for years. Currently, the winery is operated by three generations of Spotos. It all began with Stuart’s father Henry Spoto Jr., a first generation Italian-American, who taught himself how to make wine using grapes grown on his family’s property. Soon, his father’s passion became his, and Stuart too began learning the fine art of wine-making. As the years progressed, Henry and Stuart learned the techniques and chemistry necessary to make fantastic wines by honing their method and seeking advice from the experts at the University of California at Davis Viticulture and Enology Department.

The Next Level

As they continued to research and refine their craft, father and son began creating their own vintages around 2000. When out at dinner, Stuart and Henry would bring bottles of their own wines to enjoy with their meals, and would always offer a glass to the sommeliers. The sommeliers, impressed, would often ask where they could purchase the wines. Upon learning that the wines were not available on the market, the sommeliers encouraged Henry and Stuart to become licensed.

According to their website, “In 2004, Spoto Family Wines became the first bonded winery in a residential neighborhood in Sacramento County.” Applying for the right licenses wasn’t easy; the process took Stuart and his wife several months to complete. However, the Spotos’ dedicated efforts have pioneered the way for more home wineries in Sacramento County to sell their wines commercially. The Spotos’ innovation and success eventually brought them to us in 2007 when they began using us for their label printing needs!

The Spoto Wines Family

Today, the entire family is involved with the winery. Stuart’s wife Christy is an integral part of the day-to-day operations and production, from bottling to marketing. Stuart’s oldest daughter, Arianna, graduated in 2011 from California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo with a degree in wine and viticulture. In addition to assisting in the wine-making process at her family’s winery, she has worked in wine production and distribution all around the world, including Australia, Argentina, and South Africa. His youngest daughter, Alexi, graduated from the University of California at San Diego in 2013 with a degree in biochemistry, and manages the winery’s public relations and social media accounts, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Even Stuart’s parents, who are in their eighties, assist whenever possible with everything from production to blending.

The story of Stuart and Spoto Family Wines is one of a passion for craft and a love for family. A bottle of wine is delicious in its own right, but a bottle of Spoto wine is something magical; when this much care and dedication is applied to a craft, something amazing is sure to result. The fact that we get to be a part of their journey is a privilege we certainly do not take lightly.
